About LUV

LUV stands for Linux UEFI Validation.

- The LUV is a new distribution initiated by Intel and based on the Yocto Project, which incorporates existing open source test suites into a single, easy-to-use live image. - LUV is a collection of test suites - LUV also provides tests in areas not previously available, such as the interaction between the bootloader, Linux kernel and firmware. Integrated into one Linux distribution, firmware can now be tested under conditions that are closer to real scenarios of operation.

Intel kicked off his project just 6 months back and which has been tested only on x86_64 bit hardware. I have executed the Yocto project and tested on Virtual Box. The Yocto project generates 2 kind of images HDD image and ISO image (live image). If you burn into USB stick and use the same to boot, the results will be saved into USB.

Another way to do a quick test - Download the live image from https://01.org/linux-uefi-validation/downloads and start the Virtual Box from the image, which runs the tests but the results will not be saved.

This is the live image for LUV v1.1, a Linux distribution designed for testing ACPI and UEFI firmware implementations. Included in this image are the following test suites for testing ACPI and UEFI firmware,

Tests executed by LUV

BITS - http://biosbits.org/ - It does not make any sense to add this package, build and run it on ARM64 architecture (It does ACPI batch test and efivars test).

CHIPSEC - Platform Security Assessment Framework - CHIPSEC is a framework for analyzing security of PC platforms including hardware, system firmware including BIOS/UEFI and the configuration of platform components.

FWTS - Firmware Test Suite, this test suite executes ACPI related, UEFI related tests.

kernel-efi-warnings - Simple tool to look for warnings generated by the Linux kernel - I think we can run this test suite on ARM64 leg-kernel

On x86_64 the flow is as below

<boot> -> <stock grub> -> BITS (modified grub loader) -> Linux Kernel -> efivarfs -> fwts -> kerenl-efi-warnings -> <DONE>

Note that on x86_64 they use the kexec tool installed in the kernel for kernel crash.

Now on ARM64 right now we have supported

<boot> -> <latest grub loader from upstream> -> leg-kernel with ACPI support -> efivarfs -> fwts -> kernel-efi-warnings -> <DONE>

Using pre-built LUV CI loop images

You can download the latest luv-live-image from any latest pre-built LUV CI loop images build here - luv-live-image.img please use the following firmware with FVP Base model fip and bl1 binaries with updated ACPI tables Here are the scripts used by me to test luv-live-image.img on FVP model and QEMU model

How to build LUV

You can just copy and paste the below commands on your machine after installing the OE/Yocto dependency packages on your host machine distribution.

and change the following lines in your local.conf file

you can start building the project

which generates luv-live-image.img file under "tmp/deploy/images/qemuarm64/" directory.

There are 2 types of luv live images generated i.e. GPT/MBR based partitions.

1. LUV Live image (GPT/MBR) - luv-live-image-gpt.img

This image is a combination of boot and luv-results. The boot partition contains grub, kernel..etc images, configuration files such as startup.nsh, grub.cfg,grub efi and initrd image. The luv-results partition is to hold the results after running luvOS distribution.

How to test LUV image on QEMU

To test LUV image on QEMU go through Leif blog and do the basic setup - Leif Blog Note: Make sure you are using latest version of QEMU binary i.e.qemu-system-aarch64 if not you can clone the QEMU git repo, follow README and compile it on your machine before using it, follow the link QEMU It is possible to build the QEMU UEFI firmware (i.e. QEMU_EFI.fd) without DT support, by adding '-D PURE_ACPI_BOOT_ENABLE=TRUE' to the build command line

Netconsole feature test in LUV

Download the latest pre-built luv live (GPT/MBR) images from linaro server luv-latest next branch images mount it using the kpartx command. mount the boot partition and edit the boot/luv.cfg file and add the following parameter
